COVID-19 The Industry Response & Framework Recovery Protocol
The current pandemic has had a devastating effect on travel across the globe and as the world’s transport routes have shut down duty free sales have declined precipitously.
The Council, and its members, are leading requests for specific support measures for the duty free and travel retail industry. We are actively engaging with global, regional, and national bodies to ensure the important contribution our industry makes to the aviation, maritime and broader travel and tourism industries is fully appreciated.
Industry sales exceed US$ 60 bn annually. Revenues from Duty Free & Travel Retail sales are the number one source of non-aeronautical revenues earned by airports world-wide and on average account for over 40% of such revenue. Our industry supports an estimated 650.000 jobs and contributes US$35 bn. to global GDP.
Our channel is distinct from sales channels in domestic markets, which are often the beneficiaries of support initiatives either not extended to, or inappropriate for the specific needs of our industry. Additionally, the impact on and recovery phase of our industry is expected to be longer and deeper than the domestic retail channels.

RETAIL OPERATIONS RECOVERY
Following broad industry consultation the Council has published a set of protocols to guide the safe re-opening of duty and tax free stores as travel recovers.
FRAMEWORK RECOVERY PROTOCOL
As the aviation industry looks to restart, the Duty Free World Council DFWC asked stakeholders in the DF&TR industry to contribute to a survey to determine how DF&TR stores can reopen in a way that inspires customer confidence and places the health and safety of passengers and colleagues at the front of mind.
A paper setting out a blueprint for DF&TR stores recovery airside at airports has need drawn up from responses from over 300 stakeholders. These guidelines reflect broad consensus from across the industry but may vary depending on national regulations and the epidemiological assessment in each country.
A copy of the blueprint is available to download here.
The Duty Free World Council Academy (DFWCA) has created a training course which will provide industry front line sales staff with guidelines on how they can ensure their safety and that of their customers as duty and tax-free stores re-open around the world.
The online course is offered free of charge and all industry retailers are encouraged to avail of this course to ensure that all industry front line staff have the knowledge on how they can safely return to work and welcome customers in a safe store environment.
